Peace in Gaza is fragile. We need to take action to get desperately needed humanitarian aid in — while we still can.
The first stage of a ceasefire deal in Gaza is critical and welcome. But it is temporary and is not being met with real action. Aid is still being blocked. Violence is still taking lives. Gaza has been here before.
Now is the time to act. We must get food, clean water and aid into Gaza NOW. The need is urgent and growing daily. More trucks with supplies need to be allowed into Gaza every day, ceasefire or not.
The devastation in Gaza is staggering. At least 67,000 people have been killed. Ninety percent of homes are destroyed. Two million people are displaced. Water and sanitation systems are decimated, almost all hospitals are non-functional, and people have endured hunger to the point of famine.
The ceasefire agreement promised unimpeded humanitarian assistance. That promise is being broken, with Israel blocking almost $50 million worth of life-saving supplies for people in Gaza. Canada has an obligation to ensure the agreement is upheld, to support a massive scale-up of humanitarian aid, and to ensure crimes under international law are investigated and accounted for.
Together, we can demand that aid and safety for Palestinians and people in Gaza continue — no matter what happens next.
